Where to eat

Photography shows the dishes and cuisine — representative, not from the restaurants themselves.

Californian$$$

Gjelina

Venice

Abbot Kinney's long-running, wood-fired Californian kitchen — charred vegetables, thin-crust pizzas, a daily-changing board. Reserve ahead; walk-ins wait.

Japanese-Peruvian$$$$

Nobu Malibu

Malibu

Nobu Matsuhisa's glass-walled Malibu flagship, right on the Pacific Coast Highway with a deck over the sand. Black cod miso and a celebrity-watching view of the water.

American Grill$$$

Musso & Frank Grill

Hollywood

Hollywood Boulevard's oldest restaurant, open since 1919, all red-leather booths and martinis mixed by career bartenders. Order the grilled steak or the sand dabs.

Oaxacan$$

Guelaguetza

Koreatown

A Koreatown institution for Oaxacan moles, mezcal and live banda music some nights. The mole negro and tlayudas draw lines from LA's large Oaxacan community.

Italian$$$

Bestia

Arts District, Downtown

A converted downtown warehouse turning out handmade pasta and a wood-fired oven's worth of char. One of LA's hardest reservations — book weeks out.

Mexican$

Leo's Tacos Truck

Mid-City

A trompo of pineapple-topped al pastor spinning streetside on La Brea, sliced to order onto tiny tortillas. Cash-friendly, no seating, and worth the line.

Good to know

Rent a car, budget for traffic

LA's bases sit many miles apart and transit doesn't connect most of them well. A rental car is the practical choice; budget real time for freeway traffic, worst 3-7pm.

Book The Broad ahead

Entry is free but by timed online reservation, and slots fill days out in summer. A same-day standby line exists but can mean a long wait.

Morning marine layer, then sun

Coastal mornings often start grey and cool ('June gloom' in early summer) before burning off by early afternoon. Layer up for beach mornings, pack sunscreen for the rest of the day.

Reserve the studio tour early

Warner Bros Studio Tour Hollywood runs on limited timed slots and sells out on weekends and holidays. Book online at least a week ahead for your preferred time.

Parking fees add up

Museums, beaches and hotels all charge separately for parking, often $10-30 a stop. Validate where you can, and factor it into each day's budget.
