Bavaria

Wo die Berge Rufen

Bavaria layers its pleasures without apology: baroque church towers rise above hop fields, fairy-tale castles command Alpine ridges, Munich's beer gardens seat six thousand in linden shade, and the Zugspitze's glacier glints on the horizon from city rooftops on clear days.

Things to do

Mornings

Castle

Neuschwanstein Castle guided tour

≈ 3 hrs · €18

Ludwig II's fantasy castle took seventeen years to build and inspired Disney's Sleeping Beauty turrets. The throne room, silk-upholstered Singers Hall, and wooded gorge setting are as extraordinary as the paintings suggest — book tickets online weeks ahead.

⏰ Needs advance booking — reserve 1–2 months ahead
Wander

Marienplatz & Glockenspiel, Munich

≈ 2 hrs · Free

The medieval heart of Munich announces itself with the 43-bell Glockenspiel at 11:00 and 12:00. Walk the surrounding streets for the Frauenkirche's twin onion domes, the Old Town Hall, and the flower stalls of the nearby Viktualienmarkt.

Hike

Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) hike

≈ 4 hrs · €18

A brass-doored mountain elevator bored through solid rock deposits you at a stone teahouse perched at 1834 metres above Berchtesgaden. The bus journey up the mountain road is itself vertiginous and spectacular.

⏰ Needs advance booking — reserve 2–3 weeks ahead
Memorial

Dachau Memorial Site

≈ 3 hrs · Free

The first Nazi concentration camp, now a sombre and rigorously documented memorial 30 minutes from Munich by S-Bahn. Essential historical context for any visit to Germany; audio guide highly recommended.

Mountain

Zugspitze cable car ascent

≈ 4 hrs · €55

Germany's highest point at 2962 metres is reached by a combination of cog railway through Garmisch and a gondola from the Eibsee. The glacier summit offers 360-degree views into Austria, Switzerland, and Italy on a clear day.

Market

Viktualienmarkt morning browse

≈ 2 hrs · Free

Munich's daily outdoor food market has occupied this central square since 1807. Buy radishes, Weisswurst, fresh pretzels, and aged cheese from specialist vendors and eat at the central beer garden under the maypole with the locals.

Outdoors

English Garden dawn walk

≈ 2 hrs · Free

Larger than Central Park and threaded with streams, Munich's English Garden is at its calmest in the early hours, before surfers gather at the standing wave near its entrance. Follow the paths east to the Chinese Tower for a quiet beer-garden coffee.

Afternoons

Museum

Alte Pinakothek, Munich

≈ 3 hrs · €12

One of the world's oldest art museums and finest collections of Old Masters — Dürer, Rubens, Raphael, and Rembrandt housed in a neoclassical palace. Uncrowded compared to its European rivals and covered by the €1 Sunday ticket.

Boat

Boat ride on the Königssee

≈ 3 hrs · €22

Electric-powered wooden boats ply the deepest Alpine lake in Germany, pausing mid-lake so the boatman can demonstrate the echo from the cliff walls with a brass bugle. The pilgrimage chapel of St Bartholomä at the landing stage is a Baroque marvel.

Town

Rothenburg ob der Tauber old town

≈ 3 hrs · Free

The most intact medieval walled town in Germany — half-timbered houses, cobbled lanes, and six city gates so perfectly preserved that filming here requires period-appropriate cars to be removed from shot. Walk the entire wall circuit (2.4 km) for the roofscape.

Museum

BMW Museum & Welt, Munich

≈ 3 hrs · €10

The bowl-shaped BMW Museum traces the marque's motorsport history through motorcycles, racing cars, and concept vehicles. Next door, BMW Welt's silver double-cone architecture displays current models in a free-entry showcase space.

Stadium

Allianz Arena stadium tour

≈ 2 hrs · €19

The inflatable ETFE pillow exterior of Bayern Munich's ground changes colour for home, away, and national team matches. The tour covers the dressing rooms, pitch-side tunnel, and press facilities at one of Europe's most visually distinctive stadia.

Palace

Nymphenburg Palace & gardens

≈ 2.5 hrs · €15

The Wittelsbach summer residence stretches across a canal-fronted baroque complex larger than Versailles in footprint. Visit the Amalienburg hunting lodge hidden in the park — its Hall of Mirrors rivals anything in France.

Culture

Nuremberg's Kaiserburg castle

≈ 3 hrs · €9

Perched above the old town, the Imperial Castle once hosted Holy Roman Emperors and offers sweeping views over Nuremberg's red rooftops. The deep well house and Romanesque chapel inside are unexpectedly atmospheric.

Evenings

Beer

Beer garden dinner at Hofbräuhaus

≈ 2.5 hrs · €35

The Hofbräuhaus has been pouring since 1589 and seats 3500 people across its vaulted main hall and garden. Order Masskrug (a litre), roast pork knuckle, and pretzel; the oompah band makes table conversation compulsory.

Music

Classical concert at Cuvilliés Theatre

≈ 2.5 hrs · €55

The Rococo jewel of the Residenz complex — gilt loges stacked four tiers high around an intimate stage — hosts Mozart operas and chamber concerts in the room where Don Giovanni premiered. Dress appropriately; the experience is as theatrical as the stage.

⏰ Needs advance booking — reserve 2–3 weeks ahead
Stroll

Evening walk along the Isar riverbank

≈ 2 hrs · Free

Munich residents treat the Isar's gravel banks like an urban beach from April through October — bonfires, impromptu guitar sessions, and families in the shallows until well after dark. The Flaucher area south of the Tierpark is the most relaxed stretch.

Dining

Weinhaus Neuner wine cellar dinner

≈ 2.5 hrs · €65

Munich's oldest wine restaurant (1852) serves Franconian and Baden wines by the glass alongside Bavarian classics in low-ceilinged cellar rooms that smell of oak and history. A counter-programming choice to the beer halls, and superb for it.

Views

Sunset over the Alps from Olympiaberg

≈ 1 hr · Free

This grassy hill in the Olympiapark rises just enough to catch alpenglow over the distant Alps on a clear evening. Munich families picnic here as the stadium lights flicker on below.

Food & drink

Franconian wine tavern supper, Nuremberg

≈ 2 hrs · €32

In Franconia's own wine country, dry Silvaner and Bacchus are poured in stone-vaulted taverns alongside hearty regional plates. It is a quieter, less-touristed side of Bavarian drinking culture than the beer halls.

Culture

Bavarian folk music and dance evening

≈ 2 hrs · €38

Zither, accordion and brass carry traditional Schuhplattler dancing, its performers slapping out rhythms on their own knees and boot soles. It is lively, unironic, and rooted in genuine alpine tradition.

Good to know

Book Neuschwanstein weeks ahead

The timed-entry tickets sell out weeks in advance for June through September; book online the moment your dates are confirmed, then plan the Hohenschwangau hike and Marienbrücke viewpoint around your ticket slot.

Validate your S-Bahn ticket

Munich's honour system means no barrier — but inspectors are frequent and the fine for an unvalidated ticket is substantial. Stamp the ticket at the blue machine on the platform before boarding.

Alps weather changes fast

Mountain conditions on the Zugspitze or Berchtesgaden trails can swing from sunshine to thunderstorm within an hour; carry a waterproof shell, check the local Bergwetter forecast, and never underestimate altitude.

Beer garden protocol is simple

In self-service gardens like Augustiner-Keller you may bring your own food but must buy your beer from the tap. Table service gardens are the opposite. Read the sign at the entrance — locals are relaxed about tourists who ask.

Sunday museum pricing in Munich

Bavaria's state museums — Alte Pinakothek, Neue Pinakothek, Deutsches Museum — all charge €1 entry on Sundays. Plan your heaviest museum day for Sunday to reclaim the savings for a longer dinner.
