The Black Forest

Tief im Schwarzwald

Germany's great forest unspools in ridges of dark fir above half-timbered spa towns, cuckoo-clock workshops, and bakeries whose Black Forest gateau bears no resemblance to the supermarket version — denser, cherrier, and worth every calorie.

Things to do

Mornings

Hike

Feldberg summit hike

≈ 4 hrs · Free

The Black Forest's highest peak at 1,493 m offers sweeping views into Switzerland and the Vosges. Follow the red-diamond trail from Feldbergerhof — clear days reveal the Alps.

Nature

Triberg Waterfalls walk

≈ 2 hrs · €7

Germany's highest waterfalls thunder through mossy gorges — seven cascades totalling 163 m. The wooden boardwalk climbs past all of them before 10:00 when crowds are thin.

Culture

Cuckoo clock workshop tour

≈ 2 hrs · €12

A fourth-generation carver demonstrates the linden-wood craft behind the region's most famous export. You leave understanding why the good ones cost what they do.

Wellness

Caracalla Spa morning soak

≈ 3 hrs · €26

Baden-Baden's expansive thermal complex mixes Roman-style pools, waterfalls, and a rooftop hot tub above the spa gardens. Come early for the tranquil lanes.

Market

Freiburg Münster market

≈ 2 hrs · Free

The daily farmers' market wrapping the red-sandstone cathedral trades in Kaiserstuhl wines, Spätzle, smoked cheese, and still-warm Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte.

Wander

Staufen wine village stroll

≈ 2.5 hrs · Free

The vine-striped lanes of this small Kaiserstuhl foothill town lead to a ruined castle above and tasting rooms below. The Spätburgunder here is some of Germany's finest.

Outdoors

Ravenna Gorge viaduct walk

≈ 2.5 hrs · Free

A wooded gorge near Hinterzarten hides a striking railway viaduct overhead and a network of footbridges below, following a stream past moss-covered rock faces. It is a cool, green counterpoint to the region's higher summit hikes.

Afternoons

Lake

Titisee paddleboat & lake swim

≈ 3 hrs · €15

The glacial lake at 850 m stays cool through summer. Rent a paddleboat from the village dock, or simply wade off the public beach and look up through the pines.

Tasting

Gut Glottertal vineyard lunch

≈ 2.5 hrs · €45

A working winery tucked in one of the forest's sunniest valleys. Order the Weissburgunder and the seasonal Maultaschen; the terrace looks across vines to wooded ridges.

Wander

Lichtentaler Allee promenade

≈ 2 hrs · Free

Baden-Baden's elm-shaded riverside boulevard links the Kurhaus to the Cistercian abbey — past rose gardens, sculptures, and the sort of elegant unhurry that built the Belle Époque.

View

Freiburg Schlossberg tower climb

≈ 1.5 hrs · Free

A free hike up the wooded hill behind the old town rewards with a panorama from the cathedral spire to the Rhine plain. The Biergarten at the top pours cold Rothaus Tannenzäpfle.

Ruins

Allerheiligen monastery & waterfall

≈ 3 hrs · Free

Gothic ruins of a 12th-century monastery hidden in deep forest, connected by trail to a series of stepped waterfalls. Eerily beautiful on misty afternoons.

Heritage

Baden-Baden Kurhaus & casino

≈ 2 hrs · €5

Stroll the belle-époque casino halls that Marlene Dietrich called 'the most beautiful in the world.' Daytime guided tours don't require a dinner jacket.

Craft

German Clock Museum, Furtwangen

≈ 2 hrs · €6

This is the place to understand why the Black Forest and clockmaking became synonymous, with cases of cuckoo clocks ranging from folk-art originals to wildly inventive modern designs. Interactive displays explain the mechanisms behind the region's most famous export.

Evenings

View

Sunset from Kandel ridge

≈ 2 hrs · Free

Drive or cycle to the 1,241 m Kandel for one of the forest's great sunsets — the Rhine plain glows gold and on clear nights the lights of Alsace shimmer across the river.

Dining

Gasthaus dinner in Glottertal

≈ 2.5 hrs · €38

A wood-panelled inn that has fed hikers since 1749. The venison ragout, house Spätzle, and half-litre of local Pinot Noir make a quietly perfect Black Forest evening.

Nightlife

Strasbourg evening by tram

≈ 3 hrs · €12

A 45-minute tram-and-train hop takes you across the Rhine into Alsace for an evening in La Petite France — timber-frame facades, flammkuchen, and cold Kronenbourg.

Aperitivo

Fireside schnapps at the Schlosshotel

≈ 1.5 hrs · €18

The wood-fire bar of Brenners Park-Hotel pours single-estate Kirschwasser from Ziegler distillery — the proper digestif of the Black Forest, exactly as it should be served.

Views

Sunset from the Schauinsland ridge

≈ 1.5 hrs · Free

A cable car lifts you above the treeline for views stretching from the Rhine valley to the distant Vosges as the sun drops. Stay for the last car down and the forest turns nearly black beneath you.

Food & drink

Black Forest gateau and coffee evening

≈ 1 hr · €12

The region's namesake cake, layered with cherries, kirsch and cream, is best eaten slowly in a wood-panelled café as evening settles outside. It is simple, and it is exactly what it should be.

Culture

Organ recital at Freiburg Münster

≈ 1 hr · €15

The cathedral's Gothic spire has watched over the old town for seven centuries, and its organ still fills the nave most evenings with Bach and Buxtehude. Candlelight and stone acoustics do the rest.

Good to know

Get a Konus card

Overnight guests in Black Forest municipalities receive a free Konus card covering all regional buses and trains — keep your hotel receipt.

Waterfalls are busiest at midday

Triberg's falls and Allerheiligen are far more atmospheric before 9:00 or after 16:00 when tour buses have cleared.

Book Baden-Baden baths in advance

Friedrichsbad (Roman-Irish bath) requires a reservation and operates nude — read the house rules before you arrive.

Cash still rules rural inns

Many Gasthäuser and farm shops in the valley towns accept only cash; ATMs are sparse outside Freiburg and Baden-Baden.

Weather changes fast above 1,000 m

The Feldberg and Kandel ridge can be in cloud while the valley is sunny — bring a waterproof shell even in summer.
